Barnacles on prop

I lost steering, thought I had picked up a plastic bag.  Found that the prop was heavily barnacled.  Had to have the boat hauled out to clean them off.  Has anyone any idea how to stop them, I've never had this before.

Barnacles
Last year saw a tremendous amount of barnacles on boats.  There are products you can buy to put on your prop to stop them.  You could also try applying a covering of grease.
