CALSTOCK ARTS CENTRE
Friday 3 May:
A Gallery Bar Special with Esperanto
A welcome return to The Old Chapel for Esperanto, an exciting Spanish Guitar/Flamenco duo featuring Mark Barnwell and Jon Boyes. Together they create a dynamic sound, combining elements of Flamenco and Latin guitar music. Expect a combination of Flamenco/Latin standards, some improvisation and a selection of contemporary numbers including a Spanish tinged version of Hotel California, Gipsy Kings numbers and Rodrigo y Gabriella.
This is the first of a string of performances across the south west to showcase their debut album Ida y Vuelta. Translating as ‘there and back again’, the phrase is used in Andalucia to describe flamenco styles that bear the hallmark of Latin American influences – a synthesis of Spanish and Hispanic rhythm and harmony.
Delicious tapas plate will be available.
Doors, bar and Tapas 7.30pm, music from around 8.30pm.
Free entry, donations to Mark and Jon would be very welcome.
Saturday 18 May:
Gabrielle Ducomble Quintet
Rising star Gabrielle Ducomble brings her sophisticated Gallic style to the UK jazz scene. With a range of styles from contemporary jazz to French popular song, she has performed in some of the UK’s leading jazz venues and is receiving much airplay on JazzFM.
Performing in English and her native French, her set will include tracks from her recent album “J’ai Deux Amours”, as well as giving a fresh interpretation to classic songs by Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astor Piazzolla, as well as the great American songbook.
Her five piece band consists of some fine jazz musicians, including Dan Teper on accordion, Nick Kacal on bass and Nathan Mansfield on violin, as well as guitarist Nicolas Meier, whose gig at The Old Chapel last year was a highlight of the first Calstock Jazz and Blues Festival. This stunning line-up provides the perfect enhancement for Gabrielle’s superlative vocals.

Robin Ince presents The Importance of Being Interested
Award winning comedian and science enthusiast Robin Ince follows up his Happiness Through Science show with a look at his favourite scientists Charles Darwin and Richard Feynman.
Find out why we have eyebrows, why bald dogs have bad teeth, how heavy metal music makes pigs deaf and why spaghetti snaps into four pieces. It is a loving look into the minds of two giants of human imagination who changed our world view.
He’ll also stop off on the way to look at some of the more bizarre views of early science – is the ostrich really the offspring of the union of a gnat and a giraffe? (No).
A night of spaghetti, barnacles and safe cracking.
