Short Description



Classic Bermudan Cutter, 1983

Spindle is a very pretty Bermudan cutter built by Dr. Meggy in Plympton from 1976 - 1983 along the lines of a Harrison Butler design.  She was substantially restored in 2007/8.  She is in fine condition and ready to set sail having been lovingly maintained by the present owner for the last 7 years.

Surveyed end 2015.  New engine in 2008 with only 250 hours of usage.

Swinging mooring at Weir Quay available by separate negotiation.



Sleeps 4. Galley; heads. Mooring berth available by separate negotiation.

Construction & Build

Iroko on oak frames, strip plank construction. Mahogany interior. The hull is 1/2" strip iroko planking onto approx. 2" oak framing. The framing approx. 18" spacing. The timbers are fixed with copper fittings and glued. This is a very strong construction. The keel is cast iron. The hull was stripped to bare wood in 2007, some topside timbers were replaced, otherwise below waterline was totally sound. The hull was painted with 4 coats of Primocon and has been lightly sanded and anti fouled every year since. The topsides likewise received a base coat, 2 coats undercoat and 2 coats white gloss. International paints were used throughout. The hull has been maintained in good condition every year. The deck and coachroof were replaced in 2008 with marine ply, epoxy sheathed and painted.

Original mainsail with blue cover; Yankee on furling gear, 6 years old; various headsails.

Horseshoe lifebelt with name and light; Man overboard flag sinker and line; fire extinguisher; flares; 2 gas bottles; various fenders and mooring lines; CQR anchor and 120' chain; stream anchor and another if required; Hatch cover and blue sprayhood with panel. Inflatable Avon dinghy; collapsible oars. 100 litres water storage. Cushions for berths Assorted cutlery, plates, pots, pans etc.

Designed by Bruce Roberts, hull professionally built in Worcester, England by Roger Apperley of Watercraft, Diglis.  An iconic cruising and liveaboard vessel, fitted out to a very high standard by the present owner.  

A long keeled, multi chine Bermudan rigged auxiliary Ketch.  Under the working rig of genoa, mizzen sail and mainsail she would carry about 900 sq ft of canvas.  6 cylinder Perkins diesel auxiliary engine and PRM hydraulically operated gearbox and will deliver up to 120hp.
