Walking in the Area

The Tamar Valley Discovery Trail is a long distance route of some 30 miles in total, passing though the valley from Plymouth to Launceston. The Trail is varied and interesting, crossing both the River Tavy and River Tamar and incorporating a ride on the scenic Tamar Valley Line.

In addition to the main route, there are also many village circuits along the way, so there are options for those who would just like a short stroll rather than a long walk.

Trails Guides and Maps are available to download FREE from the Tamar Valley AONB website now: www.tamarvalley.org.uk, click on 'Tamar Trails' under the 'Projects & News' section. Full trail guides will be produced and available for sale after the completion of the second, and final, phase of work.

Important Notices:

  • Take care when walking on the moors, the weather can be unpredictable and dangerous. 
  • Please do not feed the ponies.
  • Do not disurb any livestock, keep your dog under control and always leave gates as you find them.
  • Do not disturb wild animals, birds or flowers.
  • Take your litter home with you and recycle whenever possible.
  • Take special care if the route you are walking crosses or follows country roads.
  • Ex-mining sites can be dangerous - please keep to marked footpaths and respect warning notices.

One of the best way to explore the Tamar Valley is on foot, and there is a good network of paths to use. For detailed information, refer to OS Explorer Map No. 108.
