The beautiful Cornish village of Calstock, with its commanding viaduct, is visited by many people over the summer, the majority of them coming up the Tamar River from Plymouth on one of the numerous boat trips which allow people to enjoy the glorious tranquility of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The end point of these trips is a stop at the delightful village where they can go to the tea rooms, one of the pubs, explore Cothele house or just sit by the River.
We have today agreed terms with Calstock Parish Council to undertake the refurbishment of the village jetty. Under the supervision of our head of marine engineering, Spencer, it is anticipated that the project will take just under a month.
The refurbishment starts tomorrow, 9th February, with load testing of the gangway. This will be undertaken by Josh Preston with the help of Austin & McLean. They will be pumping bags of water on the bridge.
On Monday, if you are about on the River, you might catch the unusual sight of the jettty being floated round here to Weir Quay Boatyard. We are bringing it round to the slipway for dismantling.
More later.....!
Friday update!
The gangway passed the load tests yesterday. So all set for floating down the River from Calstock to Weir Quay on Monday.
Monday...
An early morning start for Spencer, Saul and Mike to go up to Calstock by water to pick the jetty up and tow it back to Weir Quay. This was a slow but successful trip and the jetty is now at the bottom of the Weir Quay slipway where it is going to be dismantled before being transported to Cornwall to be blasted by Stenlakes.
